Welcome Back to Routine… and to YOU!

Finishing summer break and entering the school year - Part 2 of 2 :).  Note - this one is parenting focused but I bet you can alter it to fit your needs.

Losing ourselves in summer can be so fun!  In vacations, in play, in late nights and more leisurely mornings, in a Margarita (or 2).

Yesterday as we were leaving his first day of school, my 10-year-old and I bumped into the school principal who asked him how his first day of school went.  He replied, with zero hesitation, “It was great.  I’m so glad to be back in school.  I love the predictability and routine and knowing what’s expected of me.

I’m hearing a lot of parents say the same thing - they loved the summer but are welcoming the structure and routine a school schedule provides.

So… if you’re feeling that way - take a breath.  You made it.  AND… let’s use this changing schedule to your advantage.

What is 1️⃣ THING your body or soul is craving?

Now, go do it!  Create that space and take care of yourself!  Do it NOW before you miss the transitional opportunity for a new habit to take shape!

James Clear, author of seriously amazing book Atomic Habits, talks about how much easier it is to begin a new habit in a fresh location.  For example, if you wanna read more, don’t try doing it sitting in the same comfy spot where you binge shows.  Designate a special chair for reading and over time, that chair will inspire YOU to read.

Likewise, a “new season” brings the opportunity for a new routine.  What’s ONE simple thing you can do for you, your mind, your heart, your energy?

Some simple options:

  • Morning Hydration: Kick off your day with a glass of water. 🚰

  • 10-Minute Walk: Sneak in a quick walk before or after dinner. It’s a great way to unwind, get some fresh air, and maybe even have some good connecting chats with the family. 🚶‍♀️

  • Stretch Break: Every half hour, take 10 seconds to stretch. It’s a tiny reminder to stay present and keep your energy flowing. 🧘‍♀️

  • Morning Practice: Wake up and note three areas of gratitude and the biggest opportunities of the day.  I love this particular tool! ☀️

  • Empower the Kiddos: A new school year might mean they are ready (but honestly, they probably ARE ready…) to take on a smidge more responsibility… make their own beds, empty a section of the dishwasher, or pack their lunches. It’s a win-win for building their confidence and giving you a but more space. 💪

You might have your own ideas and needs - I'd love to hear what you're craving and what you choose!

💡 Fun fact: Even small, consistent habits can make a big difference in how you feel. According to a study in Psychological Science, having routines can actually boost happiness and cut down on stress. [Citation: Psychological Science, Vol. 32, Issue 4, 2021]

So let’s do that.  Boost happiness and cut down the stress! 🤸. LFG!

Quote to Inspire:
“The most powerful thing you can do is take responsibility for your own life.  Your choices create your reality.”  ~Oprah Winfrey

As we ease into the new school year (and around the corner fall), think about one thing that you would want this next season to bring.

Whether it’s a new routine, a focus on self-care, a connection with a certain person, or just more joy, take responsibility and make it happen. 🔥

What’s your move?

Lotsa Love!
